High-speed broadband is a “must have” requirement whether it be for at home for watching Netflix, or at work uploading important business files to cloud services.

What is Fibre Optic Broadband?

Fibre Optic broadband is the latest advancement in broadband technology, promising super-fast speeds for all of your daily internet needs. The advantage of fibre optic broadband is the increase in speed, letting you watch videos, browse pages and play games faster than ever. But just how quick is the service?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”default” color_scheme=”” bg_overlay=”” video=”” vimeo=”” video_autoplay=”true” video_controls=”true” video_mute=”true”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

How fast is fibre optic broadband?

The advantage of fibre optic broadband is the increase in speed, letting you watch videos, browse pages and play games faster than ever. But just how quick is the service? Plastic or glass cables allow for faster data transfer compared to the standard copper wires which are used in regular broadband connections. Openreach is investing £2.5bn in the deployment of Fibre Optic Broadband across the country to reach around 16 million premises by end 2015, approximately two-thirds of the UK population.

This will be deployed by two different means.

For around 75% of premises it will be delivered over Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology which will allow customers to benefit from broadband download speeds of “up to 76Mbps”, and upload speeds of “up to 19Mbps”. The distance from your local phone cabinet will determine  the actual speed you receive. The remainder will receive Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) services which supports even faster download speeds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

What is Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC)?

FTTC describes where a fibre cable runs from a BT exchange to a street cabinet that contains the Broadband equipment. From here it is linked to business premises and homes via the existing BT copper network. This then connects the home or business to the Internet Service Provider’s Fibre Broadband service.

As copper cabling still accounts for the final part of the internet connection, line length is still a significant factor in determining the actual speeds you can expect to receive.

Actual speeds experienced may be faster or slower than the estimates provided and can vary significantly throughout the day and over time. Factors affecting delivered speeds include:

  • Time of Day – the amount of Internet traffic varies throughout the day and at bust times, speeds may be reduced
  • Contention – as uptake of fibre broadband increases in a given exchange speeds may reduce over time
  • Interference
  • Wireless networking – speeds experienced on devices connected wirelessly can be significantly less than the speeds provided by the fibre broadband service

What is Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)?

FTTP describes where a fibre cable runs from a BT exchange all the way to the end-user premise. It terminates at a box (the CSP) which is fitted to the external wall. From here it is connected to a modem fitted internally which then connects the home or business to your Internet Service Provider’s Fibre Broadband service.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”default” color_scheme=”” bg_overlay=”” video=”” vimeo=”” video_autoplay=”true” video_controls=”true” video_mute=”true”][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Do I need it?

It depends upon your usage How many staff do you have, and what are you using the internet for ? Does your business use cloud services ?  If you store your files remotely, upload lots of files, or download lots of images, then you will certainly see the benefits. At home how many connected devices do you have ? Do you stream videos and music using YouTube or Spotify, or watch TV on the web ? The faster the speed , the better the experience will be.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

How much does it cost ?

It all depends upon the speed you need, and the monthly download allowance you require. Trio Telecom are working in partnership with the Connected Counties programme to provide fibre broadband to businesses across the district, offering a range of fibre broadband packages. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

When is it available?

Hertfordshire is part of the “Connected Counties” initiative to increase fibre broadband coverage to least 90 per cent by the end of March 2016. The programme is being funded jointly by both Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire County Councils, the Local Enterprise Partnerships for each county, BT and the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK team (BDUK).

Work is underway to rollout fibre to new areas of Hertfordshire. You can find out when your exchange is planned  for fibre broadband rollout at http://www.connectedcounties.org/ . The website is updated monthly and contains a series of maps and links that allow you to  check availability and speed at a given address or telephone number.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”stretch_row” css=”.vc_custom_1658239733931{padding-top: 40px !important;padding-bottom: 40px !important;background-color: #dbdbdb !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]To find out more or to get a quote call 01727 221303 or email callme@triotelecom.co.uk today.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
