This week the Government named trial areas for ‘full-fibre’ broadband – technology that provides data at speeds approaching one gigabit per second (gbps). Last month, they published information about the work being done on its broadband delivery programme, to improve download broadband speeds across the UK. The government claimed that 93% of premises in the UK can now get superfast broadband services.

So what are the different types of broadband and their speeds ?

ADSL BROADBAND
ASDL broadband is a digital subscriber line (DSL) technology, that enables data transmission over copper telephone lines to your premises.
In broadband terms this is the A-ROAD, a few potholes and multiple junctions, delivering download speeds of up to 24Mb/second , upstream of about 1..5Mb/second.

FTTC FIBRE BROADBAND
Fibre optic broadband is delivered to the cabinet, but conventional copper telephone lines are used to connect the cabinett to the premises.
The standard service the M6 MOTORWAY with download speeds 80Mb/second, and upstream of 20Mb/second.
The upgraded Business or Premium service recognises when there are delays, and uses the M6 Toll to bypass congestion during peak periods.

FTTP BROADBAND
Fibre Optic broadband to the premises, without the use of the copper phone line it utilises fibre from the local exchange to the premises. This technology is capable of delivering data speeds up to 1Gb/second.
You will still share the motorway, but you will be on the OPEN HIGHWAY through the desert.

ETHERNET LEASE LINE
This is YOUR OWN MOTORWAY, a dedicated fibre optic connection to the exchange, with no one else on it so maximum security. No junctions or on coming traffic – Ethernet speeds are symmetrical – the same speed for upload and downloads up to 1Gb/Second.
